Hindley, 60, had been in prison for 36 years and had spent more than a decade campaigning to be released from prison. She had been told by successive Home Secretaries that she must remain in prison for the rest of her life, but had appeared to be on the verge of freedom after continued reports that politicians would soon lose their powers to set minimum terms for convicted murderers.
