Shàó Àwón-Gá is a community of the Yorùbá people located in Moro Local Government of Kwara State. It's a unique place of residence for its cultural values, traditional political dynamics, educational standards and valid sustainance of inter community affairs.
Shàó Àwón-Gá was founded many years before Ilorin, the State Capital of Kwara State. And for some internal integrity, cultural sovereignty and resistance of ethnic subversion of the town, its network of accommodating aliens has become but a stringent one. Shàó Àwón-Gá is known for insurrection against brutes, tyranny, marginalization and foul plays in social game.
Culture Shàó Àwón-Gá is purely a Yorubaland with descendants/founders having been indisputably linked to the Old Òyó Empire. Its founders are harmoniously agreed to be four of Chief Papala (a hunter), Chief Iboo(a hunter), Chief Ajakitipa (a hunter) and Chief Ajankii (a warrior, of Ikoyi origin). Note that this hierarchical arrangement does not align with/project their ranks. For, each of these four is represented in the council of royal chiefs tagged as Òhòrò-in-Council. Shàó people, prior to the imbibing stages of Christianity and Islam, purely were worshippers of Ògún, Oya, Sàngó, Òrìsà Oko, Égúngún, Ifá and so on in counts. Early 18c marked the beginning of people accepting the two foreign religions. While Christianity was first introduced to the town by the white missionaries, the first Muslim convert was narrated to have said his Sha'adah (Islamic statement of baptism) at Lagos.
Till date, Shàó retains some of its old religion, worshipping of idols, but this is becoming inimical. However, culturally, this is a community known for celebrations of Àwón Mass Wedding
It's a type of wedding where many maidens/brides are married off the same day, at the same place to their various grooms.
