Safwan Sobhan Tasvir (born 1986) is a Bangladeshi-Cypriot business executive who currently serves as vice chairman of Bashundhara Group.[1][2] He is also the chairman of Bashundhara Special Children Foundation.[3]
Early life and education
Safwan Sobhan Tasvir was born in 1986 in Bangladesh to Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, the founder and chairman of Bashundhara Group.[4][5] He spent his early life in the United Kingdom.[5]
Sobhan attended Shiplake College in Oxfordshire and later earned a bachelor's degree in business studies from the American InterContinental University in London.[5] After completing his education, he returned to Bangladesh to join the family business.[5]
Career
Sobhan began his career with Bashundhara Group in the mid-2000s.[5] In 2005, he was appointed as the chief executive officer (CEO) of Bashundhara Paper Mills, where he served until 2022.[6] From 2010 to 2023, he served as a director of Meghna Cement Mills.[6] Later, he became vice chairman of Bashundhara Group.[5] In this role, he has led the group's expansion into technology, media, sports entertainment, chemical, steel, energy commodities, food commodities, and has been involved in initiatives aimed at modernizing operations and supporting investments in local manufacturing and import-substitute industries.[5]
Sobhan established T Sports and currently serves as its chairman and managing director.[1] He is also the chairman and patron of the Rangpur Riders, a Bangladesh Premier League cricket franchise[7], and is the founder and chairman of Daily Sun Editorial Board.[8][6]
In 2022, Sobhan was elected as the president of the Bangladesh Economic Zone Investors Association.[9]
Personal life
Tasvir is married to Yeasha Sobhan, who is also a director of Bashundhara Group. The couple has four children.[10]
Awards and recognition
In 2019, the Government of Bangladesh recognized Sobhan as a "Commercially Important Person".[11] He was named Global Leader of the Year 2021–22 at the 17th Asia-Europe Business & Social Forum 2022, held in London.[12] In 2022, the European Business Assembly (EBA) honored Sobhan with the Grand Star of Success award at a summit at the University of Oxford.[12] In December 2022, he was named as the best taxpayer in the young category.[13]
