Why does every article about any historical ethnic group seem to use the word "ethnonym" instead of name in places where the name is functioning solely as an ethnonym. Examples include

• Luwian language "The ethnonym Luwian comes from Luwiya" (entirely redundant)
• Basque_language#Names_of_the_language "Greek term Οὐάσκωνες (ouáskōnes), an ethnonym used by Strabo" (ok, that one could make sense)
• And I'm sure plenty more.

It feels pointlessly pedantic, and if not for the hyperlink would also be needlessly obtuse.

Just a driveby post, but I thought I'd bring it to your attention since the article Ethnonym is marked as high importance to this project. Besides, the name of the project kind of says it all. Arlen22 (talk) 02:34, 3 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I've checked Hanks et al. The Oxford Dictionary of Family Names in Britain and Ireland and it seems the whole Clan Morrison thing is wrong or badly explained. Don't know how to proceed, though.-- Carnby (talk) 07:23, 27 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect that much of the text is original research and must be deleted. or exmple:

Scottish records identify a marriage in 1584 between George Morese and Babara Forguson in Aberdeen.[6] Later in other Aberdeen records their names become George Moreson and Barbara Ferguson,[7] then George Morrison and Barbara Ferguson.[8]

is definitely wikipedian's research. So I would be ruthless and cut 80-90% of the text. On the other hand, a dictionary, being WP:TERTIARY source, must be used with caution as well. Some surname dictionaries contain mistakes and are difficult to verify, because they typically do not contain references to verify dubious claims. --Altenmann >talk 13:21, 27 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
