Pistons–Timberwolves brawl

Hey, do you think Pistons–Timberwolves brawl would pass WP:NEVENT? Or is too early to tell, and perhaps it might be better to wait a week or so to judge for WP:CONTINUEDCOVERAGE? Left guide (talk) 11:33, 31 March 2025 (UTC)

I also just searched "brawl" with an AfD prefix and stumbled upon WP:Articles for deletion/Lakers–Rockets brawl which you successfully nominated for deletion. Seems like you'd know a thing or two about this. Left guide (talk) 11:42, 31 March 2025 (UTC)
@Left guide: I'd say develop this at 2024–25 Detroit Pistons season and 2024–25 Minnesota Timberwolves season and WP:AVOIDSPLIT, if possible. Time will tell about WP:CONTINUEDCOVERAGE. —Bagumba (talk) 14:42, 31 March 2025 (UTC)
So in an interesting turn of events, someone created an article for it, and also unsuccessfully nominated it for ITN, and it's now on the chopping block at AfD. Left guide (talk) 15:30, 6 April 2025 (UTC)

RD eligibility question

If I may ask for a cursory review, do you think Greg Millen is RD-ready? I might nominate it if there's little to no work needed. Left guide (talk) 08:55, 8 April 2025 (UTC)

@Left guide: I was simply going to point you to WP:ITNQUALITY, but that seems a bit dated. I think regular reviewers generally expect each section to be sourced (e.g. the stats section), and at least one citation for each paragraph. Some might minimally check the end of each paragraph to see if there is a source there. YMMV if a given reviewer does further checking. —Bagumba (talk) 10:13, 8 April 2025 (UTC)
Proposed by another editor at WP:ITNC#RD: Greg Millen. Left guide (talk) 00:22, 10 April 2025 (UTC)
@Left guide: FYI, WP:ITNUPDATE says References should be correctly formatted and not bare URLs (even though {{Cleanup bare URLs}} would only be a yellow tag, not the red or orange type that ITNUPDATE discourages). —Bagumba (talk) 03:44, 10 April 2025 (UTC)

Does the frequency of disruption at Dallas Mavericks meet your threshold for restoring semi-protection? Looks like it's been occurring at a pace of about twice per week since your last semi expired, with the most recent instance being four hours ago. Left guide (talk) 06:55, 10 April 2025 (UTC)

Protected another three months. Let's see if it dies in the offseason. —Bagumba (talk) 07:01, 10 April 2025 (UTC)

Notability of NBA G League awards

So with your baseball hall of fame TfDs, it made me think of other minor league award stuff hanging out on the project, specifically the article entries at {{NBA G League Awards}}. Many are sourced only to nba.com which obviously isn't an independent source. I question whether most of those awards even meet WP:GNG. Maybe a bundled AfD is in order at some point, or merges/redirects to List of NBA G League awards. Thoughts? Left guide (talk) 11:08, 12 April 2025 (UTC)

@Left guide: With all the NBA stans, perhaps do a WP:BEFORE and then nominate a single "sure-fire" one first. Bundles often blow up when just one has the hint of being notable (and good luck fending off all the WP:NBARSU and WP:NBARSNC examples that will surely be cited). —Bagumba (talk) 11:22, 12 April 2025 (UTC)
Lol at the last bit in parentheses, might need your help with that ;) Left guide (talk) 11:24, 12 April 2025 (UTC)
@Left guide: Somehow Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/FIBA Basketball World Cup Top Scorer randomly comes to mind. For my own sanity, I may (or may not) concentrate a bit more on content over discussions for a while. —Bagumba (talk) 11:35, 12 April 2025 (UTC)
Ok. I'll probably attempt the merge/redirect route at some point (after doing a WP:BEFORE search) since it's less red tape, and they are plausible search terms mentioned at the list page. If there's pushback (i.e. someone reverts a redirect attempt), AfD could be a good backup option, and/or seeking consensus at the NBA project talk. Left guide (talk) 06:41, 13 April 2025 (UTC)
@Left guide: Seems consistent with WP:PRESERVE, though there's a counter at recently created essay Wikipedia:Stealth deletion. Good luck. —Bagumba (talk) 07:33, 13 April 2025 (UTC)
That's just an essay lol. And at any rate, adding the {{notability}} tag in the meantime can act as a "warning" to give others the chance to search for sources. Left guide (talk) 07:50, 13 April 2025 (UTC)
  • May I ask for an assessment of OurSports Central? It's the only source making me second guess notability-tagging a couple of those awards. See for example NBA G League Team Executive of the Year Award#References. However, if they only regurgitate league and team press releases, that seems unhelpful in establishing notability, but it'd be nice to be assured I'm not missing something. All of the cited publications I checked carry a disclaimer: The opinions expressed in this release are those of the organization issuing it, and do not necessarily reflect the thoughts or opinions of OurSports Central or its staff. Left guide (talk) 10:54, 13 April 2025 (UTC)
@Left guide They seem to be a repository for minor league news releases. I recall someone using it for some lingerie football page. I think "News Release" on the top indicates a press release. They certainly read like PRs. —Bagumba (talk) 11:02, 13 April 2025 (UTC)
@Left guide Did you know that anyone who won a G League award was once presumed to be notable?[1] ;-) —Bagumba (talk) 11:18, 13 April 2025 (UTC)
No, but upon reflection it's not that outlandish, since it seems like most G-League players would pass WP:NBIO regardless. The only potential problem I see is that it can be interpreted as including things like Jason Collier Sportsmanship Award, which is an award that doesn't seem to be selective for a high level of notability. How useful/enforceable is WP:NSPORT anyway? I thought I read some talk somewhere of it being potentially scrapped. Maybe it was from you or someone else, can't remember. Perhaps changing it to a project essay of WP:SPORT is more sensible, idk. Left guide (talk) 02:14, 14 April 2025 (UTC)
@Left guide: That portion of NSPORT is long gone anyways. I was only providing an example of how some might have higher regard for the awards. Apologies if the historical link confused you. —Bagumba (talk) 03:05, 14 April 2025 (UTC)
No need to apologize (though the sentiment is appreciated) since I was already aware it was a historical link. The current WP:NHOOPS isn't that much different, just a less authoritative significant coverage is likely to exist in lieu of presumed notable. Left guide (talk) 03:10, 14 April 2025 (UTC)
@Left guide: My bad, it is still at WP:NBASKETBALL lol. —Bagumba (talk) 03:07, 14 April 2025 (UTC)

NBA Infobox awards

Hey so I was just wondering if I should start rolling back the awards I added to some of the NBA player infoboxes. Poor George tho lolll. If only the NBA MVP was awarded a few years earlier GOAT Bones231012 (talk) 01:41, 17 April 2025 (UTC)

@GOAT Bones231012: Hi. At least put a pause on adding to more infoboxes, as Left guide suggested at WT:NBA. I dont know if you have access to something like WP:NEWSPAPERS.COM—it'd be reassuring to show that these awards got mainstream coverage back in the day (though I would assume Sports Reference did due diligence). If so, moving it to prose, or starting an elaborate award list in the body might be the way to go. On another note, adding an award that doesnt have its own link to the infobox isnt very helpful for readers not already familiar with it (but it would need to meet WP:LISTN). —Bagumba (talk) 02:18, 17 April 2025 (UTC)
I don’t have access to newspapers.com, but I was able to find the following reference besides Basketball Reference:
https://hardwoodhoudini.com/posts/bob-cousy-nba-unofficial-mvp-award GOAT Bones231012 (talk) 03:55, 17 April 2025 (UTC)
@GOAT Bones231012: Fansided isn't reliable per WP:NBARSU. But I found these clippings for the Davis[2] and Turkin [3] awards. —Bagumba (talk) 05:18, 17 April 2025 (UTC)
Appreciate the help that is actually so cool, I gotta get me a subscription. And here I am scouring the internet searching for key words all day lollll. GOAT Bones231012 (talk) 06:08, 17 April 2025 (UTC)
@GOAT Bones231012: Yeah, it's helpful for pre-Internet stuff. Otherwise, stuff like this might be mentioned on bloggy sites, but then people like me will call that source unreliable. LOL. —Bagumba (talk) 06:43, 17 April 2025 (UTC)
Lmao trying my best to stay away, but it’s harder than it looks these days😂 GOAT Bones231012 (talk) 07:00, 17 April 2025 (UTC)

How religious have you been about maintaining WP:NBA5+ on player articles? It's something I'd be more inclined to pitch in with every now and then if {{Men's college basketball award navbox}} wasn't so damn long lol; too difficult to easily commit to memory. Left guide (talk) 07:58, 17 April 2025 (UTC)

@Left guide: Rikster2 had a related comment about high school awards at #Discussion around high school honors included in basketball biography infobox above. I don't make regular sweeps. In practice, major college awards at the conference level are generally included (e.g. all-conf, all-D, all-frosh, POY, DPOY, FOY). For HS, McD AA and Parade AA are usually included. I sometimes go and remove lesser ASGs like Nike Hoop, Jordan Brand, etc. —Bagumba (talk) 08:54, 17 April 2025 (UTC)
Ok, I think you may have misinterpreted that thread above since it concerns Trey McKenney who is a HS player, so WP:NBA5+ (which you ironically quoted there too) wouldn't apply. That article isn't part of the NBA project. Left guide (talk) 09:09, 17 April 2025 (UTC)
@Left guide I think there's a general topic of what HS awards should be displayed, NBA player or not. I think when NBAHIGHLIGHTS was written, the 5+ rule was a way of punting on the issue for less accomplished players, or leaving it to WP:CBBALL for players still in college. —Bagumba (talk) 09:22, 17 April 2025 (UTC)
For HS players like McKenney, I assume it's covered by the main hoops project. I seldom hang out at WT:HOOPS, but checking its archives now, there was WT:WikiProject Basketball/Archive 19#Awards in infobox from Dec. 2023. Earlier this year, a single user created WP:WikiProject Basketball/Players, a style guide which could potentially be filled out to reflect project consensus a la WP:NBASTYLE. Capitalization of "NBA Playoffs", "NBA Finals", etc.

What's your stand on this? Howard the Duck (talk) 13:55, 18 April 2025 (UTC)

@Howard the Duck: MOS:CAPS says: Wikipedia relies on sources to determine what is conventionally capitalized; only words and phrases that are consistently capitalized in a substantial majority of independent, reliable sources are capitalized in Wikipedia. I'd have to do a more thorough look, but I'd guess "NBA playoffs" and "NBA Finals". —Bagumba (talk) 13:58, 18 April 2025 (UTC)
I asked this since I am observing the same for the play-in tournament. Most WP:RS use Title Case to refer to the "NBA Play-In Tournament": CBS, SI, NBC, USA Today, etc. There are some which do not capitalise: CNN, Y!Sports and the Guardian. This may be different for the playoffs, finals and draft. I avoided NBA.com as it's not independent of the source. For some reason, my Google News search didn't show me ESPN articles. Howard the Duck (talk) 14:16, 18 April 2025 (UTC)
@Howard the Duck: So NBA play-in tournament is probably where it should be. NBA Bubble, on the other hand ...—Bagumba (talk) 15:01, 18 April 2025 (UTC)
I dunno, but I did not remember it being called as "the NBA bubble", more like "the bubble", or the "bubble tournament", and the title as "the bubble championship", with no "NBA" branding for the most part. Howard the Duck (talk) 21:21, 18 April 2025 (UTC)

Semi-Protection - Christianity in India

Hello, I don't want to get into an edit war with anonymous editors

So, as you are an admin, I would like your say on the issue

The article is constantly edited by anonymous editors, probably the same hopping IPS

I'll let you see if a semi-protection is needed for the given article

Regards Varoon2542 (talk) 18:17, 18 April 2025 (UTC)

@Varoon2542: Thanks for trying to avert the edit war. I often abstain from taking admin action in areas I'm not a subject matter expert, as I might otherwise miss something "obvious". Feel free to make a request at the WP:RPP noticeboard. From what I can see, it looks like a content dispute, and I don't see consensus yet at the talk page. I suggest following Wikipedia:Dispute resolution (perhaps notify related WikiProjects?) Note that an IP users' address might change through no control of their own; IPv6 addresses where the first 16 characters are the same are likely the same user. There's no requirement that editors need to register an account. Assume good faith and good luck. —Bagumba (talk) 02:08, 19 April 2025 (UTC)
