Doncic trade RM

I had the same concern as you regarding that RM; didn't seem like an accurate reading of consensus. If the closer isn't willing to change it to moved, should we appeal at Wikipedia:Move review/Log/2025 April? Left guide (talk) 05:03, 22 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I'll wait for their response, and assess if I'm missing anything. —Bagumba (talk) 05:08, 22 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Rob Pelinka & Los Angeles Lakers

I saw your reverts, but have to call them into question. Many team article pages that have the president listed IS the president of basketball operations as well: Philly 76ers and Daryl Morey as an example. 2601:189:4082:D9A0:C1C8:85A6:4BAF:106C (talk) 02:40, 23 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I don't doubt it, but that's an "other stuff" argument. Plain "president" oversees the entire franchise, both business and basketball operations (like Buss). —Bagumba (talk) 03:07, 23 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Fully protected edit request for Olivier Rioux

At the very end of the college career section, can you please remove the extra space between the period and citation footnote? Left guide (talk) 22:26, 23 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Left guide. Done (you can also make fully-protected edit requests on the article talk page) —Bagumba (talk) 02:02, 24 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Bagumba - I wanted to check in with you about some of the "and here's what really happened" / "what do we really think" pieces about why the Mavs missed the playoffs. On a couple occasions, I've added a new article with some useful info and then another author adds a ton more details from that piece - generally details I intentionally omitted because I thought they verged on trivia. (Do we really need a table of anonymous quotes?) More broadly, I think the article is probably too long as it is - obviously, that's mainly my fault. I'm curious as to how you think this should be handled and/or whether the new details are actually trivia. Pinging @Left guide for their take due to their substantial contributions. Namelessposter (talk) 01:15, 24 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Namelessposter: Ideally, articles should mainly be based on reliable secondary sources, of which breaking news reports, interview quotes, and self-published opinions are generally not. WP:SECONDARY says

Policy: Wikipedia articles usually rely on material from reliable secondary sources.

The policy information at WP:INDISCRIMINATE may also be relevant to what you are describing. Aside from that, consider posting to the NBA project at WT:NBA, which could reach a wider audience of interested editors. Left guide (talk) 01:38, 24 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Namelessposter: While I'm following the news on the trade, I don't watchlist the page. Purely based on word count, it's not close to WP:TOOBIG. However, WP:NOTDIARY is worth considering on recent sports topics. When there's disagreement, refer to Wikipedia:Dispute resolution. Good luck. —Bagumba (talk) 01:58, 24 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Namelessposter: Another option is to add {{overly detailed}} (or a similar banner) atop the article, and open a corresponding discussion at the article talk page expressing your concerns while pinging the users who added the material in question. Left guide (talk) 10:24, 24 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks to both of you for your comments, it's much appreciated. I haven't decided how exactly to handle this but all of this is useful. Namelessposter (talk) 16:59, 24 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Basketball finals infobox

Do you think you can help me fix it so it's not forced lowercase? Ideally, there'd be a way to add an uppercase option, or at least enter a title manually. Left guide (talk) 08:16, 25 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

If all else fails, I suppose I can copy the coding and create {{Infobox NBA Finals}}. Left guide (talk) 08:21, 25 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Kareem

Hey, so I originally had it as Pac-8 but thought that having the other honors named Pac-12 while some were named Pac-8 might confuse readers which is why I changed all of them to Pac-12, to ensure uniformity. Also, Sports-Reference titling the page for annual scoring leaders "Men's Pac-12 Conference Yearly Points Per Game Leaders" will probably further confuse. Same for rebounding leaders. As a side note, if I were to add some of his Pac-8/Pac-12 career or single-season records, would I title that "Pac-8 records" or "Pac-12 records"? Again, Sports-Reference has it titled Pac-12. Let me know your thoughts. GOAT Bones231012 (talk) 04:09, 26 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@GOAT Bones231012: I know what you mean. Reliable sources usually have something like "Pac-8 (now Pac-12)" or "Pac-12 (then Pac-8)" before sticking with one in the rest of the article. Complicating things, the conference was also the AAWU during his first couple of years. Some other data points: George Mikan has "BAA/NBA". Pages refer to the historical Washington Redskins still, even though they're now the Washington Commanders. I wouldn't put as much weight in how databases display it; they're likely just blindly displaying a name from a db cell, not necessarily making a conscious decision. Still his sports-ref college stats do show the historic conf name. At a minimum, there needs to be a "formerly AAWU/Pac-8" somewhere (conf mention seems not even in prose yet) before sticking with just Pac-12. But is that the norm on WP sports pages, or just sticking with the historic name? —Bagumba (talk) 05:08, 26 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I’ve took the liberty of removing the 1967 pac-8 regular season championship and adding his 1967 AAWU regular season championship back. If you’ll notice, I also added a couple of records titled "Pac-12 records", my reasoning being that the records are still tops regardless of conference era and the records should be prefaced with the current name of the conference. GOAT Bones231012 (talk) 05:31, 26 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@GOAT Bones231012: I think 1968 was also AAWU, but maybe AAWU can be footnoted and just list all three under Pac-8? For active conference records, it does make sense to refer to the current Pac-12. —Bagumba (talk) 05:46, 26 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
You are actually correct, it was still called the AAWU in the 1967–68 season. I must’ve been thrown off when I saw "Pac-8 champions" in the infobox at 1967–68 UCLA Bruins men's basketball team. I will correct now on both pages. GOAT Bones231012 (talk) 07:45, 26 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ughh, but now I’m thinking about the All-Pac-8 team and scoring/rebounding leader. Is it ok if I just add a note to right next to "NCAA" at the top which states the something like the following: "The AAWU was renamed the Pac-8 Conference after the 1967–68 season as part of an expansion. It continued to grow over the years, eventually becoming what is now known as the Pac-12 Conference." Then, just rename everything Pac-12? GOAT Bones231012 (talk) 07:59, 26 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@GOAT Bones231012: For cumulative stats, I think it's fine to, say, group the conference titles together e.g. 3x Pac-8 regular season champion, and then footnote that it includes AAWU, which was renamed to Pac-8. Otherwise, in prose, it still seems strange to refer to past Pac-8 as present-day Pac-12. I'd leave it with the historical name. When referring to Pac-12, like Hall of Honor, present records etc., another footnote can say that Pac-8 eventually became Pac-12. Or feel free to ask for ideas at WT:CBBALL. —Bagumba (talk) 08:59, 26 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

User:Wikizin

This user has been adding early entries to NBA draft articles without researching and applying the necessary DABs literally for years. Is there anything that can be done? I’ve warned him just about every year about it, so have others and he never pays attention. I think a topic ban on NBA draft articles would be the best long-term solution but he at least get a timeout until the declaration deadline? Rikster2 (talk) 15:18, 27 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

deadline was actually midnight but maybe 24 hours? Rikster2 (talk) 15:22, 27 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I left a note to attempt to get them to engage. —Bagumba (talk) 16:22, 27 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Seems reasonable, thanks Rikster2 (talk) 19:07, 27 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Rikster2: It doesn't look like they are going to reply. So the AGF is that they got the message, knows to disambiguate, and knows they need to respond to reasonable questions (WP:CIVILITY). Because of WP:BLOCKNOTPUNITIVE, I'm not going to block them this time for not responding. You can pursue a WP:TBAN at WP:AN, if you want to come up with the diffs that will convince the community that they're habitually not being responsive and are a net negative. Otherwise, if this happens again, I'd suggest leaving a message on their talk page that makes it clear a response is expected, like "how do you ensure whether a link needs disambiguation or not?" You can let me know if you then think admin action is needed, or try a noticeboard. Good luck. —Bagumba (talk) 10:14, 30 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Play-in

Hey, just saw your edit with the summary about the consensus not to add play-in stats. I did it for the Mavs players, not aware (anymore?) about it, will remove that and my bad adding it in the first place. Kante4 (talk) 14:32, 30 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Kante4: No worries. Sometimes it's hard to know what's a "rule" vs. what's just been overlooked and should be added. Thanks for understanding. Follow WP:NBA (if you don't already). Regards. —Bagumba (talk) 17:15, 30 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I check there from time to time but not often enough it seems. Will put it on my watchlist. Kante4 (talk) 17:44, 30 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

ITN recognition for Tom Brown (safety)

On 30 April 2025, In the news was updated with an item that involved the article Tom Brown (safety), which you nominated and updated. If you know of another recently created or updated article suitable for inclusion in ITN, please suggest it on the candidates page. SpencerT•C 16:25, 30 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Kobe, Coby, Cobee

I'm not a huge fan of those other guys even being there at all. I don't think anyone is typing Kobe Bryant into the Wikipedia search bar expecting to land at one of the NFL players, and being surprised when Kobe pops up. Most people just Google stuff to find Wikipedia articles. Anyone interested in the NFL players will probably know their names start with a C anyway. If they have no idea at all, they will probably just Google "Kobe Bryant NFL", which comes up with the Seahawks player. I removed Coby in the past from Kobe's lead-in ([1][2]). It's undue attention for those two guys to be at the top of Kobe's article like that. The majority of readers won't even know there is a Coby or Cobee. The "AI Overview" when you Google "kobe bryant nfl" is similarly annoying: "The NFL connection to Kobe Bryant involves both Coby Bryant, a Seattle Seahawks safety, and Cobee Bryant, an Atlanta Falcons cornerback." There is no NFL connection though. Those guys have nothing to do with Kobe. They're not family members, lol. At the same time, I do understand why people keep adding it. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 16:44, 30 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@WikiOriginal-9: It's hard to objectively assess WP:HATNOTERULES' "reasonable possibility of a reader arriving at the article either by mistake". I tend to think of a reader that isnt an expert in the area, but hears a name on a broadcast or podcast. Sometimes you hear the name slightly differently, or never seen it in print. That happens to me. If I heard something that sounds like "Kobe", but otherwise didnt know the person, I'm typing "Kobe". I think I saw you remove "Jerry Rice Jr." before. Sure, any football fan knows THE Jerry Rice, but what if you didnt, or didnt think typing in the extra Jr. would matter. But sure, maybe everybody but WP regulars use Google. I have no idea how it works with Suri or Alexa. —Bagumba (talk) 17:06, 30 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@WikiOriginal-9: (talk page watcher) (also partially involved in the Kobe/Coby/Cobee thing) It's undue attention for those two guys to be at the top of Kobe's article like that. Hatnotes are purely navigational aids so article content policies like WP:UNDUE don't apply. I knew of Tony Gwynn Jr. before I ever knew about Tony Gwynn, because Jr. was in MLB when I started following baseball; announcers and reporters at the time sometimes simply called him "Tony Gwynn" and seldom talked about his father. Some readers have poor literacy or spelling, and/or often get info in audio form like the radio. And depending on time and context, readers could be introduced to a "less known" figure like the Gwynn example I mentioned. These hatnotes are totally reasonable; the goal is to get readers to the article they want without making them read articles they don't want. Rice Jr. should be restored for these reasons. Left guide (talk) 19:21, 30 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@WikiOriginal-9: Another thing to consider is that there are a variety of misspellings that seem to arbitrarily redirect to one. Cobi and Cobey point to Coby's article, while Cobe, Cobie, Koby, and Kobee (among others) point to Kobe's article. Left guide (talk) 22:00, 30 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Doncic trade again

Can you please look at the recent flurry of IP activity at Luka Dončić–Anthony Davis trade and consider restoring semi-protection or possibly doing pending changes? Left guide (talk) 11:15, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

To be clear, it's hard for me to make out whether some of them are good-faith edits. FWIW, they're all unsourced and have been rolled back. Left guide (talk) 11:22, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Done Another month. —Bagumba (talk) 13:19, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Is it reasonable to semi-protect Jrue Holiday due to IP editors persistently adding infobox awards without/against consensus? (i.e. Sportsmanship, Teammate) I guess it depends on whether such activity can be considered "disruption" per protection policy; could be WP:DISRUPTSIGNS #4: "Fails to engage in consensus building". Left guide (talk) 00:28, 2 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Left guide: Per WP:SEMI, Semi-protection should not be ... to privilege registered users over unregistered users in (valid) content disputes. Follow WP:DISPUTERESOLUTION e.g. leave a user talk page message (and even an article talk page note for other potential editors thinking the same). Drive-by editors can't be expected to know about prior project consensus. —Bagumba (talk) 01:14, 2 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ok thanks, I notified all three IPs of the project discussion on their user talk pages, and also dropped a similar note on Holiday's article talk. Left guide (talk) 01:22, 2 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

NBA play-in stats purge

I noticed you're essentially doing an extension of an edit run I began about a month or two ago (which I'm sure you're aware of since you thanked me for one of them), but got too burned out to continue. By my own very rough estimate, I think it affects about 300-500 total players, and I got about halfway through. I don't know if you're doing it in any certain order, but it might help you to know that I went chronologically starting from the oldest years. Thanks for helping, and good luck. Left guide (talk) 14:50, 2 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

No particular order. Just did a search looking for the section header. Anyone with a bizzare format or misspelling got spared. —Bagumba (talk) 15:03, 2 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

"Large list of highlights"

So I cut All-Rookie from LeBron's infobox per WP:NBAROTY:

When a player was also named Rookie of the Year, All-Rookie can be omitted for players with a large list of highlights.

and would like to continue doing it on other ROTY winners. But first I'm wondering, how many items would you consider to be a "large list"? My personal hunch/opinion is about 10+, but I also want to be sure that doesn't stray far away from a consensus I'm unaware of. Left guide (talk) 09:00, 3 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Left guide: It unfailingly seems like someone will always add it back.[3]Bagumba (talk) 08:57, 4 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yup, I noticed that too, just like Jrue Holiday smh. Even you pitched in there, and these awards keep re-appearing. Thank goodness for the {{infobox clutter}} tag; it's something of a compromise to long-term nonstop edit-warring. Left guide (talk) 09:15, 4 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Nikola Jokić pronunciation

Hello Bagumba, I hope you are well. You may know me by my previous name which was Doc Holliday. This edit may not mean too much to you but it means a lot to me. We already have the transcripted pronunciation as well as audio.

I have helped with editing this article for many years. I usually do the year end trimming because there is a lot of superfluous information added each season like scores of games and triple doubles, which quickly becomes redundant.

Anyhow, we managed for many years without adding this unsightly crammed information to the lead. As said, I brlieve the current transcrpted and audio pronunciation will suffice.

Please do not revert my most recent edit. I hope you are well and thank you for all that you do within the basketball articles. It is much appreciated. Johnnynumerofive (talk) 19:15, 4 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
