On 12 August 2015, an explosion, believed to have consisted of two separate blasts, occurred at a petrol storage station in the Port of Tianjin in the Binhai New Area of Tianjin, China.[3] The cause of the explosion was not immediately known, but media reports suggested it was most likely an industrial accident;[3] and an update by state media said that the initial blast, at least, was from unspecified hazardous materials in shipping containers at a plant warehouse owned by Ruihai Logistics.[4]
Explosion
Early reports suggested that hundreds of people were injured in the blasts, which were felt several miles away, and which registered as magnitude 2.3 and 2.9 earthquakes on the seismic scale. The smoke column resulting from the explosion was hundreds of meters high.[5][6] The China Earthquake Networks Center reported the first and second blasts as being the equivalent of 3 and 21 tons of TNT respectively.[7]
Casualties
According to the official People's Daily, and China Central Television (CCTV), at least 300-400 people were taken to local hospitals;[8] ambulances and emergency rooms were overwhelmed, and many had extensive injuries, mostly burns and explosive blast injuries. Six firefighting teams were battling the resulting blaze, with at least two firefighters being treated for injuries; contact was lost with at least two firefighters.[9][10][11]
Initial reports have stated that at least 17 people were killed and 32 severely injured.[8][5][9]
Reaction
In a Twitter update, CCTV reported that President Xi Jinping had urged "all-out efforts to rescue victims and extinguish the fire."[3] According to state news, high officials of Ruihai Logistics are being held in custody.[8]
