Municipal elections will be held in Fiji in September or October 2025 to elect members of various town councils. They will be the first local elections on the island since 2005.[1] The elections were scheduled following increasing pressure by town councils over growing responsibility concerns.[2]
Background
Local elections have not been held in Fiji since 2005, despite council members being elected to three-year terms.[3] One million dollars were added to the Fiji national budget to assist in holding these elections.[4] Elections were originally planned in 2023, but were never held.[5] The organization of the elections was criticized by the Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Parveen Bala.[6]
There will be 13 municipal elections and a formula was used to determine how many councilors are assigned to each municipality.[7] The Ministry of Local Government also held meetings on the number of seats on each council.[8]
